When you support Team Joseph’s Annual Fund, you help children like my son Joseph and families battling Duchenne muscular dystrophy. It’s the most common degenerative genetic muscle disease affecting kids. And we’re doing everything we can to defeat it.”
Founder/CEO, Team Joseph
Back in 2009, when I first found out that our now 10-year old son Joseph had Duchenne, I was devastated.
When we left the hospital that day after receiving his diagnosis, I remember so vividly the feelings of panic and disbelief. I remember buckling Joseph in his car seat and the warmth of his hands as he clapped them on my cheeks and happily said, “I love you, Mom!” He had no idea what news had just been delivered.
There were so many questions. So much fear. So many things to think about.
Maybe you’ve been in a similar situation. So many of us know the feeling of coping with the diagnosis of a devastating disease—either one you’ve had to endure or perhaps one that’s affected someone you love.
As our family began to learn about Duchenne and how it would affect Joseph’s life, the weight of the world seemed to be landing on our shoulders.
Joseph would begin losing muscle function. He’d struggle to play sports with his friends, and eventually have trouble walking, climbing stairs and wrapping his arms around my neck to hug me. He’d need a lot of care, treatment and surgeries.
And, my heart broke at the thought of Joseph’s heart and lungs ultimately being attacked by Duchenne.
But, I knew that wallowing and complaining wouldn’t help Joseph.
So, I made a decision:
We would not let Duchenne define Joseph’s life. And we would fight the good fight to find a treatment or cure so we could change the course of this disease for Joseph and every other child with Duchenne.
Everything the doctors told us—every scary fact and statistic we encountered—was simply the history of Duchenne.
Team Joseph is committed to building the future of Duchenne—a future that turns this disease into a manageable condition. One that doesn’t cause parents terrifying panic and, most importantly, one that allows young children to live a healthy and happy life despite their diagnosis.
And you are so important to helping us create that future!
WHAT WE’RE DOING
At the end of the day, we know that the only way we can stop the progression of Duchenne is through aggressive, cutting-edge research. That’s at the heart of our mission.
Getting more funds into the hands of researchers around the world who are dedicating their lives to finding a treatment is what we’re laser-focused on every day.
During 2012, I had a busy travel year. It was an exciting one that had me at conferences and meetings with some of the most brilliant minds in Duchenne research.
The bottom line is that we’re getting much closer to finding a treatment.
But, these scientists need more funding. Without it, precious opportunities will be lost.
So, we know that we need to step up our game to support their work and fund more research.
And we also know that Team Joseph needs to increase our ability to grow as an organization. To position us well for all of the strategic and day-to-day work involved in running our growing nonprofit, we need more resources.
This is where our new Annual Fund Campaign comes in.
This campaign will help us DO MORE TO DEFEAT DUCHENNE.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
With a donation to our inaugural Annual Fund Campaign this year, you can make a significant difference for this generation of children as well as those who aren’t even born yet.
Every single person who makes a donation at any amount—whether it’s $1,000 or $100 or $25—helps us reach our goal.
In addition to the huge help your donation will have on all that we need to accomplish at Team Joseph, there’s something else very special that your donation will do:
It will give us hope.
Hope because we know we’ve got you with us on this journey.
Hope because it takes a village of everyone doing their part to make big things happen.
Hope because the kids we hug tightly, kiss and send off to school each day will have more promise of living out their dreams of becoming doctors, firefighters, sports stars or whatever they’re most inspired to do.
And your donation will have a ripple effect—reaching many others who are working so hard to defeat Duchenne along with Team Joseph.
Children, moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents, loved ones, friends, schoolmates and entire communities are affected. The impact is exponential.
Your gift to our annual fund is a beautiful expression of your personal commitment to the hope and promise of a treatment or cure for Duchenne.
It’s you saying “Yes, I’m in this with you!”
And that means everything to us.
We can’t predict the future, but we’re going to do everything we can to create one without Duchenne. With passionate supporters like you, I know we can do it.
GIVE IN HONOR OR MEMORY OF A LOVED ONE
You can make your gift even more special by making it a tribute.
When you give in honor or in memory of someone, we’ll send a lovely notification to anyone you designate. And you can include a personal message if you’d like.
For people you know who care about our work, this is a meaningful and gracious way of expressing your sentiments at birthdays, holidays or for any occasion. It’s certain to warm the hearts of people who receive a tribute from you.
